There was an outage on the 18th of July 2017. On the said date, Eskom reported that the outage occurred as a result of burnt jumpers. The root cause is still subject to investigation by Eskom but it is believed that it is primarily as a result of corrosion on the line.
Another outage was experienced on the line on the morning of the 20th of July 2017. The municipality reported the issue to Eskom. However, as the municipality team was investigating the root cause of the outage, it was discovered that the outage emanated from the municipality’s side.
A joint maintenance team is being put together with the view of drafting a program for a maintenance plan which amongst other issues will define the fault reporting protocol. The fault reporting protocol will required that both the municipality and Eskom install real time monitoring devices to show when the outage is on the Eskom side and to show when the outage is on the municipal side.
The municipality and Eskom will further develop a plan on performing the required maintenance on the badly corroded line. The plan will take into account the challenge that the line cannot be maintained while it is still live, given the current staff constraints within Eskom.
